Open-world RPG with Gothic vibes climbs to second place on SteamDB’s Hot Releases

YAR: Forgotten Throne is set in Borea, a dark world heavily inspired by Slavic mythology. A mysterious corruption is spreading there, poisoning animals, rivers and entire regions. As a nameless adventurer, players set out to find the source of the curse and restore balance to the world. There are three classes to choose from: Warrior, Archer and Volkhv – a kind of Slavic mage or shaman.
The gameplay of YAR: Forgotten Throne combines open-world exploration, real-time combat and classic role-playing progression. Players roam through a freely accessible world, discover hidden locations, dungeons and secrets, and complete more than 100 quests. Depending on the chosen class, combat focuses on melee weapons, ranged attacks or magic. Skills and equipment can be steadily upgraded as the game progresses. There are also numerous side systems such as crafting, cooking, smithing and fishing, which further reinforce the game’s sandbox character.

YAR: Forgotten Throne launched on Steam on April 3 after more than a year and a half in Early Access. So far, the indie RPG has collected more than 1,100 user reviews, 93% of which are positive. Players are particularly praising the atmospheric Slavic setting, the strong Gothic and Witcher vibes, and the rewarding sense of exploration. On the other hand, criticism is aimed at technical issues, a combat system that still feels somewhat unpolished and weaknesses in the localization. YAR is fully dubbed only in English and Russian, though subtitles are also available in other languages. The developers emphasize that neural networks were used for all translations except the Russian one. It should be noted, however, that a large share of the reviews still comes from the Early Access phase and therefore does not necessarily reflect the state of the final version.
If you’re in the mood for a classic fantasy RPG in the style of Gothic and can overlook some technical shortcomings, YAR: Forgotten Throne may be worth a look. After all, the title is currently sitting in second place in SteamDB’s “Hot Releases.” The RPG currently costs $15.49 on Steam, and no launch discount was available at the time of writing. YAR is also classified as “Playable” on the Steam Deck.
