Deal | Steam: City-building masterpiece available at half price for the first time

Frostpunk 2 is the successor to one of the best city-building games of recent years. German gaming magazine GameStar calls it a “city-building masterpiece” – albeit a “stubborn” one. The game is not necessarily what fans expected from a sequel. However, Frostpunk 2 has its own appeal and should still be worth a look for fans of city-building strategy – especially now that the game is available for the first time at 50% off. That means Frostpunk 2 is currently available for $22.50 instead of $45, which according to SteamDB is the lowest price since its release in September 2024.

In Frostpunk 2, players no longer lead a small, desperate settlement built around a generator, but instead manage an entire metropolis in the eternal frost. Rather than painstakingly constructing individual houses and workshops, the focus now shifts much more toward political planning. That is part of the game’s appeal: Frostpunk 2 is bigger and more strategic than its predecessor. However, the survival aspect takes a back seat, which proved somewhat disappointing for some die-hard fans.

Because of the game’s unexpected change in direction, the reception on Steam has been somewhat divided, with 75% positive reviews from around 26,000 users. The User Score on Metacritic is similar at 7.5. A look at the critics’ Metascore of 85, however, shows that Frostpunk 2 is a good game in its own right. The 9/10 rating in the PC Games review underscores that. The current 50% discount should therefore be interesting not only for city-building fans in general, but also for Frostpunk fans who have not yet given the game a chance. Compatibility with the Steam Deck is listed as “Playable.” However, the game has a fairly complex UI and is designed around mouse controls, so you should not expect a particularly comfortable experience.
