Deal | Not for beginners: Complex city-builder (90% positive) drops below $10 on Steam

Anyone looking for a city builder that goes beyond simply placing buildings and instead focuses on deep micromanagement will likely feel right at home with Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic. The game combines an exceptionally detailed economic simulation with a socialist Cold War setting. The title, which is rated Playable on Steam Deck (currently available on Amazon for $740), is once again available on Steam with a 75% discount, reducing the price from $39.99 to just $9.99. According to SteamDB, this matches the game's all-time lowest price.
In Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic, players take control of a socialist republic caught between the Eastern Bloc and the West during the Cold War. What sets the game apart is its highly detailed production chains. Raw materials must be mined, processed, stored and transported by truck or train to factories and stores. At the same time, players are responsible for housing, employment, education and essential services such as electricity, water and heating. In the realistic mode, even building a simple road requires actual workers, vehicles and construction materials. As a result, the game is considerably more demanding than traditional city builders such as Cities: Skylines or SimCity and is aimed primarily at players who enjoy intensive micromanagement.

Players praise the 2024 city builder from 3Division and Hooded Horse for its tightly interconnected production chains, realistic construction mechanics and high degree of player freedom. However, the learning curve is widely considered to be very steep. Reviews also point to a somewhat cumbersome user interface, while the tutorials reportedly do not explain every gameplay system in sufficient detail. Players who are new to the genre may therefore be better off starting with the aforementioned classics. Even so, Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic has accumulated around 27,000 Steam reviews with a Very Positive average rating of 90%. On Metacritic, the city builder holds a Metascore of 81 and a User Score of 8.2.
