The new Xiaomi 17 series mostly stands out for the rear screens on the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max. Although considered to be just a gimmick feature by some, it appears Xiaomi is sticking to its guns and plans to continue with the rear screen design.
As reportedly confirmed by Xiaomi President Lu Weibing on a livestream yesterday, Xiaomi will continue with the development of the rear screens on next year's phones. Presumably, the company's next-gen flagship phones will be branded as the Xiaomi 18, although leaker Digital Chat Station hints at the "Xiaomi 18" moniker merely being a placeholder at this point.
In addition to continuing with the rear screen on future models, Xiaomi also plans to improve on the feature, likely with better app support. While the vanilla Xiaomi 17 is effectively certain to launch globally, it remains unclear if either of the two "Pro" models with the rear screen will make their way outside of China in the future—particularly as the rear displays would require further integration with the numerous apps and services mostly used outside of China. We expect better clarity on that in the coming months, however.
