Qualcomm's successor to last year's Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 will apparently be branded as the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 and not the Snapdragon 8s Elite as expected. Comprehensive details of this chipset, SM8735, have now also leaked ahead of its imminent debut.

Qualcomm's next-gen sub-premium chipset is on the way. The silicon makers launched the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 a year ago as a more affordable alternative to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and while most have expected the successor to that chipset to be branded as the Snapdragon 8s Elite, new information seems to indicate that will not be the case.

As revealed by Digital Chat Station, the successor to last year's Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 will be branded as the "Snapdragon 8s Gen 4" and not the Snapdragon 8s Elite as expected. It's unexplained why Qualcomm would make that branding choice but it's likely due to the absence of the Oryon cores seen on the Snapdragon 8 Elite. Instead, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 will use ARM's Cortex-X4 and A720 cores.

To be exact, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is said to feature one Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.21 GHz, three Cortex-A720 cores at 3.01 GHz, two at 2.80 GHz, and the last two at 2.02 GHz. Supposedly, that configuration is enough to earn the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 an AnTuTu total score north of two million. Such a score would be comparable to scores recorded by Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phones like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra (buy on Amazon) and iQOO 12 Pro.

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is said to feature the Adreno 825 on the GPU side, likely a slightly nerfed version of the Adreno 830 on the Snapdragon 8 Elite. System-level cache seemingly also gets hamstrung, from a total of 12 MB L2 cache down to 6 MB. Lastly, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is tipped to launch in early April and is expected to be adopted by devices like the Redmi Turbo 4 Pro, Xiaomi Civi5 Pro, and iQOO Z10 Turbo Pro, with the first of those going on sale in mid-April.
