Samsung's camera division has typically been the frontrunner in the high-res sensor race, starting with the 108 MP ISOCELL HM1 on the Galaxy S20 Ultra. That is set to change, however, with Sony seemingly set to debut a new 200 MP sensor for flagship use.
As reported by Digital Chat Station, Sony is geared to launch its first 200 MP CMOS sensor. That comes after the release of other 200 MP sensors like Samsung's ISOCELL HP2, ISOCELL HP9, and Omnivision's OVB0B. Unlike those sensors, however, Sony's 200 MP will be a much larger unit, with the source claiming it will have a physical size of 1/1.1". In comparison, the ISOCELL HP2 and HP9 are 1/1.3" and 1/1.4" sensors respectively.
All of that considered, Sony's upcoming 200 MP is expected to be the CMOS sensor of choice amongst next-gen flagships, with its 16-in-1 binning outputting larger pixels than even the type 1-inch LYT900 on the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. Supposedly, several flagship phones next year may adopt a 200 MP + 200 MP setup, with Sony's new 200 MP sensor as the main camera and the ISOCELL HP9 beneath a periscope—like on the new Xiaomi 15 Ultra.
