An Android device calling itself the Nokia G22 has rolled up onto the Geekbench database for the first time. However, the alleged 2023 device's appearance might cast a dark cloud over hopes for significant upgrades in this round of HMD Global-brand smartphones, not to mention those for software support in the existing G21.

The "HMD Global Nokia G22" has sparked rumors of 2023 upgrades on the OEM's budget line-up through its inaugural appearance on Geekbench. The allegedly upcoming Android smartphone has appeared by this name, as well as by the new code-name Sunfire; however, none of that has helped the device set the benchmark alight on its debut.

The supposed 2023 handset has posted dismal single- and multi-core scores with a chipset that, with its 8 cores clocked at 1.61GHz, seems to be none other than the Unisoc T606 already found in the G21.

On the other hand, the "G22" has 4GB of RAM, at least, thereby possibly hinting that it will drop the 3GB base option of its possible predecessor. In addition, it has completed this inaugural leak with Android 12, whereas the G21 still ships with even older software.

Therefore, as Nokia has made a commitment to "2 years of software upgrades" per new device, it is possible that the brand intends to pitch an upgrade to Android 14 as a G22 exclusive. Accordingly, the G21 may be left ending its life on Android 13 at best.
