Thanks to a new software update, the feature set of a certain Withings smartwatch has been expanded slightly. To be more precise, ScanWatch 2 users will no longer have to manually start an AFib analysis.

The Withings ScanWatch 2 (from $309 on Amazon) is getting a new feature. According to a new report, this feature isn't being rolled out to all users yet and is still in beta testing at this point. That being said, the software update has the version number 7.5.2, and there’s no information on when the feature will be rolled out to all users. As always, regional restrictions and delays may also apply.

Strictly speaking, the new smartwatch software feature doesn't add brand-new features, so it doesn't allow owners of a ScanWatch 2 to take new types of measurements. However, evaluating heart health and detecting certain abnormalities no longer requires a manually initiated process.

Specifically, the new feature relates to the detection of atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is quite common and often goes unnoticed by many affected individuals. It frequently manifests as rather non-specific symptoms like fatigue, which don't necessarily point to atrial fibrillation directly. Nonetheless, the mortality rate of patients with atrial fibrillation is higher. If a smartwatch detects atrial fibrillation, a doctor visit should usually follow.

Previously, it was necessary to initiate a specific measurement in order to check for AFib. After the new software update, the ScanWatch 2 can now also check for signs of atrial fibrillation automatically in the background. If detected, the user will be prompted to take an ECG with the watch. This background (pre)screening is done with an optical sensor via photoplethysmography. Since atrial fibrillation can occur sporadically, this could be a practical addition to the smartwatch’s capabilities.
