Withings launches high-precision body composition scale with 99% DEXA correlation

The new Withings BodyFit is now available at a price of $280 (€250), with certain premium features locked behind an optional Withings+ subscription. The scale promises accuracy of up to 50 g (0.11 lb) for body weight measurements, though this figure doesn’t necessarily reflect the measurement uncertainty. It also provides body-composition data, including fat and muscle mass. Withings has embedded electrodes not just in the main unit but also in the handle. The key advantage of this setup is that electrical currents can be measured across different areas – even throughout the entire body. By contrast, systems relying solely on foot electrodes don’t always produce representative measurements – just imagine an athlete who has never skipped a leg day but has no interest in upper-body training. Based on an internal study, the company claims the BodyFit’s measurements show a 99% correlation with DEXA scan results. DEXA, short for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, is widely regarded as a particularly reliable method of determining body composition.
According to Withings, the BodyFit can also measure arterial stiffness, helping users evaluate their cardiovascular risk. With a resolution of 320 × 240 pixels, the 2.8-inch display not only shows weight measurements but also allows users to view their progress and even weather forecasts. As expected, the smart scale is compatible with the Withings app and supports both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. For a more affordable alternative, you may want to consider the Withings Body Comp (available on Amazon for $198).
