Timex has launched the Huckberry x Timex 1979 Black Max. In case you aren't familiar, this is the reissue of a lesser-known sports watch design from the late 1970s in a more modern design. The reissue is exclusive to Huckberry and stays close to the original model’s all-black aesthetic, but it still gets updated materials and dimensions.
The watch is housed in a 41mm stainless steel case with a fully brushed black finish. Case thickness is listed at 10mm, which gives it a relatively flat profile for a sports-oriented design. The dial is black, surrounded by a metallic silver tachymeter ring, with full Arabic numerals and a high-contrast layout. A bright orange seconds hand provides the only strong color accent.
Power comes from a quartz analog movement, chosen for accuracy and low maintenance. Timex specifies a standard SR626SW battery. The watch is fitted with a matching black stainless steel bracelet featuring a fold-over clasp, with a 20mm lug width. A mineral crystal covers the dial for basic scratch resistance.
Water resistance is rated at 100 meters, so the watch suitable for swimming and general water exposure, though not for diving. The new Black Max looks more like a casual sports watch rather than a specialized timing instrument, despite the presence of the tachymeter scale.
The original Timex Black Max dates back to 1979, a period when the brand was experimenting with bolder case shapes and darker finishes as quartz technology was becoming mainstream. While Timex is more widely associated with affordable field and military-style watches, models like the Black Max represent a small part of that exact same era.
The Huckberry x Timex 1979 Black Max is priced at $249 and is now available through both Huckberry and Timex. It's a pretty straightforward reissue that is more about visual continuity rather than any modern complications.
