Tails of Iron may look cute with its hand-drawn art style, but it is set in a merciless fantasy world where anthropomorphic rats are oppressed by frogs. Players take on the role of Redgi, the young heir to the rat kingdom, who must rise up after a devastating frog invasion to reclaim his homeland.
Tails of Iron presents itself as a 2D action RPG, but features clear Soulslike elements. Its combat system relies heavily on precise timing, requiring players to read their opponents, block, dodge and strike at the right moment. While this approach is manageable against the frog army’s foot soldiers, the game’s boss fights can be genuinely challenging. Redgi can equip a variety of weapons and armor that not only affect stats but also shape the overall playstyle. Heavy armor, for example, slows the rat prince down while allowing him to withstand significantly more damage.
In its review, Nintendofans praised Tails of Iron for its hand-drawn visuals, gripping story supported by strong voice acting, and a varied combat system featuring a wide range of enemy types. The game’s progression was described as highly motivating. Criticism, however, was directed at the limited character development. While the narrator is fully voiced, other characters communicate only through symbols, which reduces the emotional impact. The reviewers also pointed to the lack of adjustable difficulty settings as a notable drawback.
Tails of Iron earned a solid 8.5 out of 10 from Nintendofans. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 81 and a User Score of 7.6. Nearly 14,000 Steam users have reviewed the game, with 88% giving it a positive rating. In the past, Tails of Iron has received discounts of up to 88 or even 90%, but according to SteamDB, a 92% reduction is a first. This drops the price to a historic low of around $2.
