The Game Awards 2025 delivered no shortage of surprises – most notably the historic success of the French indie RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which broke records by winning nine awards and even surpassing The Last of Us Part II. Equally impressive was the sheer volume of new announcements. Over the course of the 3-hour, 35-minute livestream, 22 new titles were unveiled. Below, we highlight five standout games that are likely to be among the biggest talking points for players. A full list of all remaining announcements can be found at the end.
Divinity returns – bigger than Baldur's Gate 3
Larian Studios made a surprise return with the official announcement of a new game set in the Divinity universe. Described by the studio as one of its most ambitious projects to date – even surpassing Baldur’s Gate 3 – the game remains largely shrouded in mystery. While the genre has been confirmed as a classic RPG, Larian has ruled out a direct sequel to Original Sin, explicitly stating that this is not Original Sin 3. The trailer’s closing moments also sparked excitement, finally revealing the long-speculated statue in the desert that had puzzled fans for quite some time.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic – KOTOR’s legacy returns alongside a racing game
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic has been revealed as a story-rich single-player action RPG that positions itself as a spiritual successor to the beloved Knights of the Old Republic series. The game is being developed by Arcanaut Studios, led by Casey Hudson – best known for his work on Mass Effect and KOTOR. In a surprising twist, Star Wars: Galactic Racer was also announced, a racing game set in the Star Wars universe that caught fans off guard with its unexpected shift in genre.
Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred – Mephisto takes center stage
Blizzard took the stage to unveil the second major expansion for Diablo IV, Lord of Hatred, scheduled for release on April 28, 2026. The expansion places Diablo’s brother at the center as the main antagonist and aims to drive the story forward while reintroducing classic elements from the series. One major highlight for longtime fans is the return of the Paladin, who joins the roster as a playable class – available immediately to players who pre-order the expansion.
Lara Croft returns: Two new Tomb Raider games
Lara Croft is set to make a double comeback with two newly announced titles – Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Tomb Raider: Catalyst. While each game has a distinct focus, together they mark a fresh start for the franchise and aim to redefine the future of the iconic series.
Legacy of Atlantis is a reimagining of the original Tomb Raider, emphasizing classic exploration, puzzle-solving, and tomb raiding – all brought to life with modern technology. Catalyst, by contrast, leans toward a tightly woven, story-driven campaign featuring interconnected areas and a cinematic presentation. Both titles are being developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Amazon Games.
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 – strategy meets sci-fi
Creative Assembly is making a bold move by bringing the Total War formula fully into the Warhammer 40,000 universe for the first time. Leaving fantasy battles behind in favor of futuristic warfare, the game shifts its focus to Space Marines, Orks, the Astra Militarum – and, based on early glimpses, the Eldar as well.
