The Timex SSQ was a breakthrough for the brand’s digital watches back in 1975. While the LED displays of older models had to be turned on by pressing a button, the LCD on the SSQ was always activated and basically worked like an always-on display, even back then. Timex is now relaunching this digital watch to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
The manufacturer largely retains the striking look of the original, as the blue frame around the display makes the watch clearly recognizable. However, there are two changes. First, the stainless steel case and the bracelet get a brushed finish, which should make them less prone to scratches than the glossy finish of the original. Second, Timex replaces the crown with one button on both the left and right sides of the watch, which should make it easier to set the time and date.
The functions remain unchanged. The Q Timex 1975 SSQ Digital Reissue can only display the time, the date and a 60-second timer. The internal electronics of the case have been modernized, although Timex does not specify whether this results in a longer runtime for the CR2016 battery. The watch is water-resistant up to a depth of 50 meters, though Timex recommends that the buttons should not be pressed while the watch is submerged.
