New Sony WH-1000XM4 over-ear wireless headphone refresh pictured before global release
Sony is expected to update its WH-1000X series with a new budget model soon. Based on recent rumours, the company intends to release its new pair of over-ear wireless headphones on September 7. However, it has not confirmed anything yet.
In the meantime, Roland Quandt has returned with fresh images of the so-called Sony WH-1000XM4C or Sony WH-1000X M4C. As the image below shows, the new headphones are set to arrive in three colours, including a new Lavender finish. Visually, little separates the WH-1000XM4C from the older WH-1000XM4 in the former's Black and Platinum Silver options.
However, the lack of NFC branding indicates that the WH-1000XM4C will lack NFC quick pairing support. Additionally, Sony will not include a matching case or accessories. Instead, the WH-1000XM4C may ship with a simple grey case and equivalent cables.
Moreover, the new headphones will maintain a 3.5 mm jack and a USB Type-C port. Reportedly, Sony has swapped a Bluetooth 5.3 modem for a Bluetooth 6-capable equivalent. Conversely, unchanged 40 mm dynamic drivers are rumoured to return, along with 10% shorter battery life when active noise cancellation (ANC) is enabled.
Sony is alleged to have priced the WH-1000XM4C at €249 in the Eurozone and £219 in the UK. For reference, this would represent a €130 and £130 decrease compared to the WH-1000XM4 that was released in 2020.
While US pricing has not leaked yet, we would expect similar pricing to the UK, based on the WH-1000XM4's release. Even so, this pricing would currently make the WH-1000XM4C more expensive than the WH-1000XM5 (curr. $198 on Amazon), which does contain the same cutbacks as Sony's cheaper pair of WH-1000X headphones.
