On the face of it, the new Razer USB 4 Dock looks a lot like the company's older Thunderbolt 4 Dock Chroma (curr. $299.99 on Amazon). However, Razer promises improved compatibility, presumably given the lack of Thunderbolt branding, as well as a wider port selection.
Please note that the USB 4 Dock lacks Razer's infamous Chroma RGB lighting. Also, while Razer claims that the new docking station offers 100 W Power Delivery, its technical specifications provide the following clarifications about its USB ports:
- USB 3.2 Type C Gen 2: 1x USB Type-C with 85 W PD (100 W PD in), 1x USB Type-C (10Gbps) PD20W, 1x USB Type-C 3.2 (10Gbps)
- USB 3.2 Type A Gen 2: 2x USB Type-A Gen 2 (1x Support for BC1.2)
- USB 3.2 Type A Gen 1: 2x USB Type-A (Gen 1 – 5 Gbps)
Moreover, Razer has installed Gigabit Ethernet, SD and MicroSD card readers and a 3.5 mm jack. Meanwhile, single DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.1 ports serve as dedicated 4K video connections with peak 240 Hz and 120 Hz refresh rates, respectively. Those peak refresh rates are only true when connecting one monitor, though. For some reason, adding a second monitor drops refresh rates to 120 Hz on one and 60 Hz on another.
Currently, the Razer USB 4 Dock can be pre-ordered through the Razer online store for $229.99 in Black or Mercury finishes. At the time of publication, pre-orders should start shipping on November 21. Incidentally, Razer will throw in a Joyplot Chroma skin with all pre-orders, which we have pictured below.
