Jolla, the company founded from the ashes of Nokia's MeeGo, is back with a new smartphone, and it runs a new version of its Sailfish OS. The new Linux smartphone is called the Jolla Phone and it arrives as a successor to the original Jolla Phone released in 2013.
In a lengthy post made on its X account, Jolla spoke about the importance for Europe to have its own operating system that can compete with America's iOS and Android mobile operating systems. The post also touts its new Sailfish OS 5 as the only commercially viable European mobile OS, and the one OS that wouldn't siphon your data.
While details on the features of Sailfish OS 5 are scarce, that isn't the case with the new Jolla Phone, which is already available for pre-order.
According to the pre-order page, the Jolla Phone will have a 6.36-inch FHD+ AMOED display with 390 ppi, a 20:9 aspect ratio, and Gorilla Glass protection. Based on the provided images, the Jolla Phone will have a wide notch at the top of the display. It will be powered by an unspecified MediaTek processor, and a 5G one at that since the phone has 5G support.
The new smartphone will also have 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage that can be expanded with a microSD card. There's no mention of other RAM and storage configurations. The Jolla Phone also features dual rear cameras that consist of a 50MP primary sensor and a 13MP ultrawide angle camera. The large notch above the display will house an undisclosed camera.
The spec sheet also states the Jolla Phone will feature a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, an RGB notification LED, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, dual SIM (nano only), and a 5,400mAh user-replaceable battery. In addition, the phone will have a privacy switch that disables microphones, Bluetooth, Android apps, etc. when activated. The Jolla Phone will be available in Orange, but users will be able to purchase additional back covers in Black and White.
Jolla says the phone will only be produced if it receives at least 2,000 pre-orders by January 4, 2026, with shipping scheduled for the end of the first half of 2026. As of the time of writing, it has received 2,056 orders which means the phone should be mass-produced. With respect to availability, the phone will be released in the UK, and the EU including Norway and Switzerland. However, with enough interest, it might be made available in other countries including the US.
Those who wish to pre-order will pay a deposit fee of €99 and get to purchase the phone for €499. The final retail price isn't known yet as that is said to be dependent on the final specifications and bill-of-materials. However, Jolla says its estimate is between €599 to €699.
