According to new rumours, Apple will replace the current second-generation HomePod as early as 2024. Purportedly, Apple has designed a third-generation edition to integrate more closely within its ecosystem, with a touchscreen serving as a way to control HomeKit devices.

Reportedly, Apple is planning to release a next-generation HomePod with an overhauled design compared to the first and second-generation models. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the third-generation HomePod will feature a 7-inch touchscreen, departing from the minimalist approach of the HomePod and HomePod mini. In fact, a 7-inch touchscreen is what Google includes in the Nest Hub and its predecessors.

Kuo adds that Tianma will manufacture the display rather than Apple's other suppliers like BOE, LG Display or Samsung Display. Kuo did not provide any details about the supposed functionality that a touchscreen would add to the HomePod, nor the smart speaker's design. Presumably, a display would offer support for the Apple Home app to control HomeKit-enabled devices and music streaming services that are currently accessible via voice commands on the HomePod and HomePod mini.

Previously, Mark Gurman claimed that an 'iPad-based device' is one of the ways in which Apple hopes to expand its smart-home offering. While Gurman believes that Apple will continue with its incremental Apple TV 4K refreshes, there is another prototype that leverages the Apple TV, HomePod and iPad as one device. Kuo asserts that Apple is targeting a 2024 release for a third-generation HomePod; other details are unknown at this stage, though.
