Motorola Edge 50 Fusion: Even though the manufacturer made some cuts, the midrange smartphone is still good
While there are many midrange models from Motorola, there are only few in the high-quality Edge series, and the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion is even the only more mid-priced model (so far) this year. Depending on the storage equipment, it costs around 400 or 450 Euros (~$434 or $488) directly from the manufacturer.
The classy case of the Motorola Edge 50 Fusion could easily also be used in a more expensive smartphone, particularly since it comes in various materials such as vegan leather or velvet depending on the color version. It offers good workmanship and is very slim and protected from dust and water. The smartphone is relatively light and has a 6.7-inch display. But the slow USB-2.0 connection without image output shows that this is not a smartphone of the high-end segment.
In terms of software, there is again fairly pure Android 14 with the Motorola-typical functions gathered into a single app. The manufacturer promises three large updates and 4 years of security patches until April 2028. However, in our test unit the promised two-month interval for security updates has already passed for quite a while.
WiFi 5 is a step back, since the Edge 40 Neo predecessor still offered WiFi 6E, allowing you to use the less crowded 6-GHz band. This also has an effect on the WiFi speeds, depending on the router. On the other hand, the Edge 50 Fusion inherits the not-very exact locating characteristics of the predecessor.
The camera performs at a good midrange level overall, allowing you to create videos in 4K and at 30 fps. But the algorithm shows some problems with brightly illuminated red and yellow color areas that look burned out, while other smartphones in our comparison have no trouble with this.
The display offers very good color accuracy and can also be very fast at up to 144 Hz. In terms of performance, there is a new SoC with the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, which is able to stand out in the graphics benchmarks, although it shows some weaknesses in the AI computations.
The speakers sound fairly decent, and the good battery life means that you don't have to constantly recharge the smartphone.
