After months of testing and improvements, security engineer and modder Andy Nguyen has finally released PS5-Linux, allowing users to turn their console into a functional Linux gaming PC.

Last month, security engineer and modder Andy Nguyen started experimenting with running Linux on the PS5. After some testing and improvements, he has finally released PS5-Linux, allowing users to turn their console into a functional Linux gaming PC.

PS5-Linux is here

According to the official GitHub notes, PS5-Linux uses a patched hypervisor vulnerability to unlock the console’s hardware. Once installed, the PS5 can run like a desktop PC powered by 8 CPU cores (16 threads) clocked at 3.5 GHz, along with a GPU running at 2.23 GHz. This setup is strong enough to run Steam games and emulators smoothly. It also supports 4K at 60Hz over HDMI, along with audio output.

The tool is currently limited to PS5 “Phat” models running firmware versions between 3.xx and 4.xx. Some versions in the 3.xx range do not support M.2 storage, while 4.xx firmware versions do. Support for older firmware versions may be added later, but it is not a priority. Newer firmware versions, like 5.xx, could also get support in the future, but with limitations since Linux would run inside a virtual environment instead of having full access to the hardware.

To get started, you will need a USB drive with at least 64GB of space, ideally an external SSD for better performance. A USB keyboard and mouse are required for navigation, along with a USB Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter for internet access. There is also optional support for installing Linux on an M.2 SSD if your PS5 supports it. If you want to use the DualSense controller, you’ll need a separate Bluetooth dongle, as built-in Bluetooth is not supported yet.

There are still a few limitations and bugs. This is not a dual-boot system, so you can’t switch between PS5 OS and Linux directly. You’ll need to run the exploit each time you want to boot into Linux. Features like standby mode are not available, and some users may face issues with HDMI output or screen saver behavior depending on their monitor.

For those interested, the full installation guide and required files are available on GitHub. Just keep in mind that this is still an experimental project, so it’s best suited for advanced users who are comfortable with setup and troubleshooting.
