Google has unveiled the next version of Wear OS, now called Wear. However, Google did not comment on what existing smartwatches would receive the new OS, if any. Samsung has confirmed that current Galaxy Watch models will remain on Tizen OS, while Fossil is unsure if it will be capable of bringing any of its Wear OS products onto Wear OS 3.0.
However, the Mobvoi support team has informed at least one person that the TicWatch Pro 3 GPS will see Wear OS 3.0 at some point. Unfortunately, the representative did not specify when the smartwatch would receive the OS upgrade beyond a vague 'in the future'. Presumably, Wear OS 3.0 will be coming to the TicWatch Pro 3 LTE too, seeing as it only adds an LTE modem to the TicWatch Pro 3 GPS.
To date, the TicWatch Pro 3 GPS and Pro 3 LTE are the only Wear OS smartwatches with Qualcomm's Snapdragon Wear 4100 SoC. By contrast, most competitors run the old Snapdragon Wear 2100, 2500 or 3100, which are all based on the same platform. These SoCs struggle to handle Wear OS now, especially those with 512 MB of RAM. The fact that Wear 2100/2500/3100 smartwatches may miss out on Wear OS 3.0 should come as no surprise, in our opinion, as Qualcomm released the Snapdragon Wear 2100 almost four years ago.
Hence, we would not be surprised if the TicWatch Pro 3 GPS and Pro 3 LTE end up being the only smartwatches to transition from Wear OS 2.xx to Wear OS 3.0. You can read more about Wear OS 3.0 in our corresponding Google I/O 2021 article.
