Apple details watchOS 8 compatibility with new features coming to the popular smartwatch series
Apple unveiled watchOS 8 on Monday, the annual upgrade for the Apple Watch platform. The company has not confirmed when it will release watchOS 8, but it has detailed what changes it has made and which devices will compatible with it. One of the biggest changes is the new mindfulness app, which replaces the Breathe app. Apple has added a new reflect feature within the revised app that supposedly will help you 'establish a meditation practice' with 'short, thought-provoking theme[s]'.
Additionally, Apple has enabled portrait mode photos and has made it possible to share photos via Mail and Messages. watchOS 8 will lay out the photo collection from your Memories in a mosaic grid too, providing an overview of your photo library.
Moreover, watchOS 8 enables sleep respiratory rate tracking, Pilates & Tai Chi workouts and real-time audio controls in Control Center. Apple has also integrated more automation and security features within watch OS 8, such as unlocking a car with a Watch Series 6 device. However, these will only be available to Apple Watches in select markets. You can read more about watchOS 8 here.
watchOS 8 will be compatible with the below Apple Watch generations. In short, all devices that received watchOS 7 will be eligible for watchOS 8. Hence, the Watch Series 3 will receive this year's update. Please note that you must have your Apple Watch paired with an iPhone 6s or newer running at least iOS 14, though.
