Smartphone gaming is a cool thing and constantly evolving. Thanks to cloud gaming and increasingly powerful mobile chipsets, playing AAA titles on a phone that were previously only available on consoles or PC is now possible. Of course, casual games also exist and should run on nearly every phone.
But do you even need loads of power? Or is a phone like the Xiaomi Redmi 15 5G, which we recently reviewed for, not sufficient for gamers?
Our gaming test with the Xiaomi Redmi 15 5G
Some requirements for basic gaming are certainly met. A 144Hz screen with Full-HD resolution, 8GB RAM and an accurate touchscreen are onboard. However, if you look at benchmarks, the affordable Redmi 15 5G is not a gaming phone. It only manages 20 fps even at low settings in Genshin Impact, while PUBG Mobile is only playable at very low settings.
Xiaomi still has one trick up its sleeve
What the Redmi 15 does offer is a very long battery life under load. We measured well over 7 hours, so the handset is suitable for long gaming sessions away from power outlets and power banks. If you want to play less demanding games or use cloud gaming, you can get a pretty good bargain here.
It depends on the type of gaming
Whether it is important for a phone to offer lots of gaming performance really depends on what type of gamer you are. If you want to play the latest games without an internet connection and input lag, buying an expensive phone might be worth it.
However, if you mostly play simple games on the go and don’t want to depend on a nearby power outlet or recharge with a power bank, the Xiaomi Redmi 15 5G offers extremely long battery life, which can be very practical on long trips.
