The Xbox Game Bar is getting a new Compact Mode that aims to make the overlay Windows gaming handheld-friendly. Microsoft is currently testing the mode in the Xbox Insider Program, and it is currently available to the members of the program.

Microsoft has just announced a new Compact Mode for Xbox Game Bar, with a focus on making the overlay more usable on Windows gaming handhelds. These devices usually come with screens that are smaller than 9 inches, and things that are designed for regular laptops and larger screens don't generally work well.

The company says that the Compact Mode will deliver a simplified view and offer key information at a glance. Oliver Xu, the senior manager for Xbox Experiences, adds that the mode will simplify navigation to make sure that you can easily access the content you want.

Additionally, on the Home widget, you can get quick access to the game launches installed, including EA Play, Steam, Ubisoft Connect, and Battle.net. The Home widget in the Compact Mode of the Xbox Game Bar also lets you view the currently running games and the games that you have played before. It even lets you close the currently running game.

All the aspects of the Compact Mode for Xbox Game Bar are designed to be navigated using controller buttons. Microsoft notes that it's possible to customize a button on the gaming handheld to act like the Win+G shortcut, enabling quick launch of the overlay.

But note that the button customization will only work on gaming handhelds that allow customized button mapping (512 GB Lenovo Legion Go curr. $550.03 on Amazon). As of now, the new Compact Mode for Xbox Game Bar is currently available on the Xbox Insider Program. If you're not a member, you can test out the mode by signing up for the program.
