According to a new report, the Surface Laptop 5 could miss out on AMD Ryzen models, a break from earlier generations. Purportedly, the Surface Laptop 5 could arrive with Intel Alder Lake-U series processors instead, a fate now also rumoured to be the case for the Surface Pro 9. Prices, memory configurations and new colour options have leaked too.

Roland Quandt and WinFuture have shared numerous details about the Surface Pro 9 and the Surface Laptop 5, two devices that Microsoft is expected to announce next month. While more has leaked about the Surface Pro 9 than the Surface Laptop 5, it seems that the pair could share several components. Contrary to earlier rumours, Quandt asserts that the Surface Pro 9 will only be available with the Intel Core i5-1235U and the Core i7-1255U, not their more powerful Alder Lake-P series siblings.

For reference, this does not apply to the Surface Pro 9 5G, which is anticipated to feature the Microsoft SQ3, a customised version of the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3. Additionally, Quandt claims that Microsoft will offer the Surface Laptop 5 with the same processor options. Incidentally, Dell already offers these 15 W processors in the XPS 13 2-in-1 and XPS 13 9315, with Alder Lake-P parts reserved for the XPS 13 Plus. Reportedly, the Core i5-1235U and Core i7-1255U could find their way into the Surface Laptop 5 15, not just the 13.5-inch model.

Stranger still, Quandt reports that he has seen no evidence of AMD models yet. Although he has made not ruled out the possibility of such SKUs existing yet, he makes a point of mentioning that no AMD Ryzen-powered models have turned up so far. Elsewhere, the Surface Laptop 5 and Surface Pro 9 are thought to carry over their predecessor's displays, for better or worse. Quandt adds that Microsoft will sell both models with 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB of storage too, as well as 8 GB of RAM or 16 GB of RAM. Potentially, Microsoft could offer 32 GB of RAM in 'Business' models, as is the case with the Surface Laptop 4.

Furthermore, Quandt writes that he has seen the Surface Pro 9 for approximately €1,300 with the Core i5-1235U, 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD, which would be in line with the Surface Pro 8. Similarly, the Surface Laptop 5 13.5 is said to start at €1,200, with the Surface Laptop 5 15 joining the party at nearer €1,500. Finally, Forest and Sapphire colourways should be joining the Surface Laptop family this generation; press images of the new colours have not leaked yet, though.
