MediaTek to release Helio P90 SoC with advanced AI features
Taiwanese SoC maker MediaTek is currently rolling out the Helio P70 chips that are powering the Realme U1 phones. MediaTek specializes in efficient SoCs that power entry-level and mid-range devices, but the company is now aiming at entering the high-end SoC market with the announcement of the upcoming Helio P90 model.
The successor of the Helio P70 was teased in a Twitter post that presents it as a “powerful, efficient” chip integrating “groundbreaking AI” features. If the unannounced Helio P80 is just a smidge slower than the Snapdragon 8150, as presented in someleaked benchmarks, the P90 would definitely be a worthy opponent for Apple’s A12 Bionic and Samsung’s Exynos 9820. As far as the advanced AI features are concerned, MediaTek did state that it is heavily investing in neural network tech along with 5G tech, so the Helio P90 could be 5G-ready and integrate novel AI capabilities.
With the Helio P8 still unannounced, it’s is quite difficult to say when the P90 would launch. Rumors claim that the first device to integrate the Helio P80 could be the Oppo R19 launching in early 2019, which would make the P90 prone for a mid-2019 release at best. The Twitter teaser could be a way to signal that MediaTek is ready to battle it out with Qualcomm and Samsung.
