Reviews for the MSI GS70-2QE16SR51

82% MSI GS70-2QE16SR51 Notebook Review | Notebookcheck
Black, red, silver. MSI's slim gamer GS70 gets an update. The new generation is now equipped with the GeForce GTX 970M, and MSI has also thought of striking colors for the chassis. However, the fan noise and temperatures are striking as well – our review tells you why.
84% MSI GS70 2QE Stealth Pro

If anything you could consider the MSI GS70 2QE Stealth Pro to be a slightly strange laptop. It sports a large 17in screen and isn't particularly portable, yet MSI has focussed intently on reducing its profile. If we were making a 17in laptop, we'd probably not consider thickness and weight as important factors - at least not compared to 15in and 14in models.

80% MSI GS70 2QE Stealth Pro review
Source: Expert Reviews English Archive.org version
Overall, we're impressed with the MSI GS70 2QE Stealth Pro. It's supremely powerful thanks to Nvidia's latest graphics chip but manages to maintain its elegance with its slim and relatively light chassis. Like any early adopter, you do have to pay a premium for this. We'd say the investment is probably worth it, because you're likely to be able to run the latest games on higher settings for longer, and a laptop like this is a long-term investment.

MSI GS70 Stealth Pro
Source: Hardwareheaven English Archive.org version
Starting with the design and build quality of the GS70 2QE, or Stealth pro, we have a system which uses a familiar design. The all metal casing feels good quality, something which is enhanced by the brushed lid and we like that the branding is minimal. At less than 2cm thick it also means that despite this being a large 17.3″ system it is very portable (helped by the weight) and so it is nice that MSI offer the protective case.

Comment

Model: The MSI GS70 is another example of gaming laptops of the new generation moving towards being lighter and slimmer. The MSI GS70 comes in a conservative MSI design with a matte black aluminum casing, but also is available in red and silver. It weighs 2.7 kg and is 0.86 inch (2.18 cm) thick. This mediocre compared to the average laptop, but impressive considering the hardware that is being packed into this slim body. At 17.3 inch wide, the MSI GS70 also boast a 1080p HD LED monitor which looks sharp and has a high color accuracy.

As a gaming laptop, it is no surprise that the MSI GS70 is packing top of the line quad core Intel i7 processor and a GeForce GTX 970M graphics card optimized for gaming. It can also pack up to two SSDs in RAID 0 (256 GB), which further enhances its speed. While the storage solution is silent, the constant noise from the fan during heavy load can get rather annoying. The MSI GS70 also heats up rather fast during heavy use such as gaming or rendering. Furthermore, battery life is an issue, lasting anywhere from 1 to 5 hours depending on the use.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M:

Second fastest high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4720HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

17.30": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.7 kg:

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

82%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
