Reviews for the MSI GE72-6QF16H21

80% MSI Apache Pro GE62 & GE72
Source: Mobile Tech Review English Archive.org version
The MSI Apache Pro models are relatively slim, yet they're powerhouse performers with all the bells and whistles laptops used to have--like Ethernet, a DVD drive and ample room for heatsinks and ventilation. In the $1,100 to $1,300 range well configured, they offer a lot of bang for the buck. Styling is decent, the laptops have aluminum lids and we love the easily serviceable and upgradable internals.

80% Skylake powered gaming
Source: Expert Reviews English Archive.org version
There's a lot to like about the GE72 6QF. It's unsurprisingly powerful considering its high specification, there are plenty of connections and some of the gaming-centric extras will be useful. The only real negatives are its design, which is beginning to feel a little basic, and the frugal SSD storage. Compared to some of its rivals, such as the Gigabyte P37W and Asus G751JT, it's otherwise better specified and good value. It will be interesting to see what MSI's competitors can do with their Skylake refreshes but for now, the GE72 sets an impressive yard stick.

The MSI GE72 Apache Pro is an excellent gaming laptop. It boasts top-of-the-range components and performance for anyone who wants to play video games in Full HD with all settings on max. It has a quality screen, a fantastic cooling system and a very good keyboard. All it's missing to become a flawless laptop is better built-in speakers, although that can be said about just about any laptop.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M:

Second fastest high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

17.30": This display size is a standard format for desktop replacements (DTR). The DTR laptops are heavier to carry, need more power, but texts are easy to read and high resolutions are no problem. DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.9 kg:

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI) was founded in 1986 in Taiwan. MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

87.25%: This is an above-average rating. Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that about one fifth of all tested models receive a better rating.
