MINISFORUM announces the Neptune HX90G mini PC with AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX APU and RX 6650M dGPU
MINISFORUM’s GPU dock for mini PCs seemed like an interesting solution, but the concept did not turn out as popular as the company had hoped for initially. Instead of allowing users to mount a full-fledged desktop GPU, MINISFORUM now plans to offer mini PC models with pre-installed laptop-grade dGPUs. This is where the new Neptune Series comes in, and, according to Minisforum’s latest press release, there are at least three dGPU mini PCs planned, including two all-AMD variants and an Intel+AMD one.
The first model (apparently world's first, as well) to be released is the HX90G, which combines the Ryzen 9 5900HX processor with the Radeon RX 6650M 8 GB dGPU. MINISFORUM also plans to release a Ryzen 9 6900HX + Radeon RX 6650M model, as well as an Intel Alder Lake + Radeon RX 6650M variant later on. From the pictures provided with the press release, we can see that the overall size of the system seems the same with that of the HX90, yet the profile appears slightly thicker given the addition of a dGPU.
MINISFORUM is modifying the cooling system to include 7 heat pipes (3 for the CPU and 4 for the GPU) running liquid metal coolant plus a dual-fan design. This setup is supposed to offer excellent heat dissipation with relatively low noise in full load. Maximum TDP for the CPU+GPU is set at 150 W (50 W for the CPU and 100 W for the GPU), but the entire system will need a 260 W power adapter.
As always, these models primarily come in barebone form without RAM and / or storage, so users can choose a separate option directly from the mini PC maker or add their own preferred modules up to 32 GB of DDR4 and up to 1 TB NVMe SSD storage. Connectivity is ensured via the Wi-Fi 6 + BT 5.1 M.2 card, and port selection includes 3x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, 1x USB-A 3.1, 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 1, 2x HDMI + 2x DP video outputs, audio jack and 2.5 GbE jack.
No pricing or availability info for now, but, judging by current prices going for the HX90 models, the new HX90G may end up costing upwards of US$1,000.
