Lenovo's proof-of-concept AI display addresses privacy concerns by providing a discrete NPU for on-device AI capabilities. While constantly having a camera tracking your physical activity will definitely require some getting used to, local processing slightly eases the somewhat dystopian vibe.

At CES 2025, Lenovo announced its curved AI-powered display that monitors users' movements and nudges them when it detects poor posture or signs of fatigue.

The sensors detect user orientation while the motors ergonomically tilt and adjust the height of the screen to suit the user in real time. Ostensibly this is aimed at improving healthy PC usage habits enhancing productivity. However recent watershed events such as Microsoft Recall and the ambiguity of the nature of Lenovo's AI implementation, were enough to create unease in the consumer technology space.

Thankfully, Lenovo has an answer to the latter question: a discrete NPU, or dedicated AI chip. This reduces the need for cloud processing and keeps user data secure on their PCs. This is in addition to the basic privacy feature of the monitor that blurs the screen when the user steps away from the computer. But while a dNPU might make the idea of a camera perpetually tracking physical activity behind the screen a easier pill to swallow, the concept is still jarring for 2025 sensibilities.

To sweeten the pot, the AI chip in Lenovo's AI Display can function with non-AI PCs, letting them use LLMs and handle machine learning requests from the user. Perhaps this offer is tempting enough for some users to ignore the unsettling feeling of a product like this. For now though the Lenovo AI display with built-in NPU is still a proof-of-concept device, not quite ready for mass production yet.
