HMD has announced a new pair of earbuds called the HMD Amped Buds, and it describes it as the world's first wireless earbuds with a charging case that wirelessly powers up wireless charging compatible smartphones
. In a nutshell, it is a pair of earbuds with a case that doubles as a wireless charging power bank.
The HMD Amped Buds are in-ear earbuds with an unusual design. The earbuds themselves which have a hinged design and stems, come in a charging case quite different from what rivals offer. Rather than a clamshell case like that of the AirPods Pro 2 or OnePlus Buds Pro 3 (curr. available on Amazon for $144), the earbuds are stored in the sides of an ultra-slim case akin to a power bank.
The shape of the case isn't just for aesthetics as it actually doubles as a wireless charging power bank that can be used to charge a phone with support for wireless charging or magnetic wireless charging. And if your phone doesn't support wireless charging, you can still top up the battery by charging via the USB-C port on the case. Although, you wouldn't be able to get a full charge for your phone as the case has a 1,600mAh battery capacity. However, when in a pinch, it should come in handy.
The large battery capacity of the case also means you get several hours of battery life with the earbuds. HMD says users can expect to get up to 95 hours of playback time with the charging case but that drops to 58 hours if ANC is turned on. For those who want more specific numbers, the earbuds which have a 35mAh battery, will last up to 4.9 hours with ANC on and 8.1 hours with ANC off.
The HMD Amped Buds have 10mm drivers, active noise cancellation (ANC), and environmental noise cancellation (ENC), and support for Qualcomm's Snapdragon Sound. There are three microphones on each earbud for crystal clear calls. The earbuds have support for touch controls and can even be used to activate virtual assistants like Google Gemini.
The HMD Amped Buds have support for Find My Device on Android, allowing owners to locate them when they get lost. They connect via Bluetooth 5.4 with support for Google Fast Pair and can be paired to two devices simultaneously, with seamless switching between the two. They also have an IP54 rating for protection against dust and sweat.
Available in Black, Cyan, and Pink, the HMD Amped Buds will cost £179.99 in the UK and €199.99 in the rest of Europe when it becomes available to buy. There's no info on its availability in North America.
