Lenovo IdeaPad 510S-13IKB 80V00026GE Subnotebook Review

For the original German review, see here.
With the IdeaPad 510S-13IKB, we have a 13.3-inch subnotebook in our lab. We have already reviewed the identically designed IdeaPad 510S-13ISK sibling a few months ago. However, the inner components are different. While the 13ISK series uses Skylake processors, the 13IKB models come with Kaby Lake CPUs. Our review will reveal whether the new CPU generation brings any advantages. Rivals of the IdeaPad include computers such as the Asus X302UV, the Acer Aspire V3-372, the HP Envy 13, the Asus ZenBook UX303, and the Apple MacBook Air 13.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)
Screen flickering / PWM detected | 250 Hz | ≤ 80 % brightness setting | |
The display backlight flickers at 250 Hz (Likely utilizing PWM) Flickering detected at a brightness setting of 80 % and below. There should be no flickering or PWM above this brightness setting. The frequency of 250 Hz is relatively low, so sensitive users will likely notice flickering and experience eyestrain at the stated brightness setting and below. In comparison: 54 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 19019 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured. |

Performance
With the IdeaPad 510S-13IKB models, Lenovo offers a series of mid-priced 13.3-inch subnotebooks. The used Kaby Lake processors are powerful enough for the coming years. Our test model is the current top model of the series and costs about 800 Euros (~$858). Other configurations are available. The identically designed IdeaPad 510S-13ISK series adds further models to Lenovo's portfolio. Currently, the cheapest model of this series is the Lenovo 510S-13ISK 80SJ0019GE (Core i3-6100U, 128 SSD) for about 550 Euros (~$590).
Processor
Kaby Lake has finally found its way into Lenovo's 13-inch models. The company uses an Intel Core i7-7500U (Kaby Lake) dual core processor, which is one of the power efficient ULV models (TDP: 15 watts). In term of hardware design, Kaby Lake and its Skylake predecessor are almost identical. Intel has primarily optimized the existing technology in the Kaby Lake generation and increased the clock rates. The Core i7 processor works at a base clock of 2.7 GHz. Thanks to Turbo, the clock rate can increase to up to 3.5 GHz (both cores). The CPU runs at full speed only in the single thread tests. When executing multithread tests, the clock rate falls to 2.9 to 3 GHz after a few seconds.

System Performance
A powerful processor and a fast solid-state disk are used to ensure a fast system. We did not face any problems. The results of the PCMark benchmarks are very good. The notebook delivers sufficient performance for all usual fields of applications. However, the Core i7 processor increases the price of the laptop significantly. Most users might be better off with the Core i5-7200U, which, although brings with it a slightly lower performance, the performance reduction is not noticeable in everyday tasks and comes at a significantly lower price. For comparison: Price search engines list our current test model from about 880 Euros (~$944). The 80V00010GE (Core i5-7200U) is already available for 700 Euros (~$750). The only difference between these two models is the used processor. Hence, the Core i7 processor increases the price by almost 180 Euros (~$193). It is not possible to increase the performance of the laptop any further, since Lenovo has already optimized this model to its limits.

Storage Device
An SSD from Samsung is used as the system drive. The 2.5-inch model offers a total capacity of 256 GB. About 170 GB is available to the user. The rest of the storage capacity is used by the Windows installation and a recovery partition. The transfer rates of the SSD are good.

Graphics Card
Intel's HD Graphics 620 graphic core is responsible for rendering graphics. It supports DirectX 12 and works at clock rates of up 1050 MHz. The results of the 3D Mark benchmarks are normal for the used GPU. It is not possible to increase the graphic performance by adding a second RAM module, since the IdeaPad has only one RAM slot.

Gaming Performance
The IdeaPad can play games that do not have very high hardware requirements. However, you have to accept lower resolutions and low to medium quality settings. The playable games include “Overwatch”, “Tomb Raider” and the “Farming Simulator 2017”. The used hardware is not powerful enough for demanding games such as “Deus Ex: Mankind Divided” and “Mafia 3”. Regardless of the settings, these games cannot be played.

Temperature
During the stress test (Prime95 and FurMark run for at least one hour), the IdeaPad behaves the same way in mains operation and on battery. The processor works at 1.6 GHz, the graphic core clocks at 900 to 950 MHz. The IdeaPad does not really get that warm. Only four measurement segments exceeded 30 °C (~86 °F) during the stress test.
(+) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 33 °C / 91 F, compared to the average of 35.9 °C / 97 F, ranging from 21.4 to 59 °C for the class Subnotebook.
(+) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 35.4 °C / 96 F, compared to the average of 39.4 °C / 103 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.3 °C / 78 F, compared to the device average of 30.7 °C / 87 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are cooler than skin temperature with a maximum of 26.4 °C / 79.5 F and are therefore cool to the touch.
(±) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.3 °C / 82.9 F (+1.9 °C / 3.4 F).

Energy Management
Power Consumption
While idling, the IdeaPad is relatively efficient in terms of energy, with a maximum power consumption of 7.4 watts. During the stress test, the energy demand increases to 28.6 watts. It would be higher if GPU and the CPU in particular worked at their full speed. The power adapter is rated at 45 watts.

Battery Life
The 13.3-inch laptop lasts 5:40 hours in our practical Wi-Fi test, which simulates opening web sites. The profile "balanced" is active, the energy saving features are disabled and the display brightness is set to about 150 cd/m². The IdeaPad achieves a battery life of 5:30 h in our video test. We determine this value by running the short film Big Buck Bunny (H.264 coding, 1920x1080 pixels) in a loop. The Wi-Fi modules are disabled and the display brightness is set to 150 cd/m². The IdeaPad is just about on par with its Skylake sibling in the practical tests. However, it delivers longer minimum and maximum runtimes.

Lenovo's 13.3-inch laptops are also available with Kaby Lake processors from now on. Intel's new CPU generation delivers sufficient performance for the coming years. The performance gain of Kaby Lake compared to Skylake does not lead to higher system noise and higher temperature increase. A fast solid-state disk ensures a fast system. While it is possible to replace the SSD, this requires opening the case, since the computer does not have a maintenance hatch. The lit keyboard appears to be good overall.
The Kaby Lake processor does not bring any real advantage. Those who want to save a few Euros, can safely select a Skylake model of the IdeaPad.
The battery runtimes are quite good. However, a 13.3-inch laptop in this price range could perform better. Lenovo has not considered that long battery runtimes are more important than the highest possible performance in the 13.3-inch range. The IdeaPad would have profited more from a battery with higher capacity than from a new Kaby Lake processor. The Full HD IPS display with wide viewing angles delivers acceptable measurement results. However, we expect more from an 880-Euro (~$944) laptop.
