In a recent podcast, serial leaker Moore's Law Is Dead and critic Gene Park explained how Xbox can turn things around with the next-gen Xbox Helix. The duo highlighted that Xbox should ensure console exclusives and games specifically optimized for Xbox Helix.

Whether it is killing physical game discs, attempting to cancel Hideo Kojima’s upcoming title, or the lukewarm reception of Marvel’s Wolverine, Sony is not having a great time. In stark contrast, Xbox has been making some genuinely good moves. For instance, Xbox announced a new disc-to-digital service which allows you to get digital copies of your physical game discs. Xbox is also now financing Hideo Kojima’s Physint, which Sony moved away from.

Seeing this, some gamers are seriously wondering whether Xbox can actually turn things around with the next-gen Xbox Helix. Someone posed this same question to Moore’s Law Is Dead, asking how many Xbox Helix consoles Microsoft can realistically sell. While the leaker didn’t throw out a sales number, MLID did provide a detailed response as to what Xbox needs to do to ensure that Xbox Helix is a success.

Exclusives sell consoles

Starting with the most obvious thing, MLID and Gene Park, who accompanied the leaker on the Broken Silicon podcast, think that Xbox needs exclusives that are not on PlayStation. Games sell consoles, as evidenced by Nintendo’s success. So, MLID and Gene Park argue that Xbox needs to have some big exclusives, maybe even The Elder Scrolls VI.

The new Xbox management appears to have recognized this, as reintroducing Xbox exclusives was one of the first major decisions of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma after her appointment.

Interestingly, MLID thinks that Xbox doesn’t even need to have strict platform exclusivity and can release console games on PC as long as those games play the best on Xbox Helix. Xbox Helix is reportedly a pretty powerful console thanks to the AMD Magnus APU. So, MLID argues that Xbox can market Xbox Helix as the best place to play games, even better than PCs that cost thousands of dollars.

While we’ll have to wait and see how the Xbox Helix stacks up against high-end PCs, we do think that Microsoft will be able to sell a ton of Helix consoles if games like The Elder’s Scrolls VI play the best on the console. The only thing Microsoft needs to do ensure this happens is nail the price of Xbox Helix.
