The Fujifilm X half (from $649 on Amazon) is only available in silver, dark gray and black at the moment. However, FujiRumors has now published a series of images that show the camera in white. According to PetaPixel, the launch of this white model variant is currently only planned for the Chinese market. Therefore, it’s unclear if or when this new Fujifilm X half will debut in other regions.
Either way, the combination of a white body and light gray synthetic leather gives the already unusual camera an even more striking look. Fujifilm will apparently also offer a white leather case, but the technical specifications are expected to remain unchanged. The Fujifilm X half is one of the most unusual compact cameras on the market due to its 18MP 1-inch sensor, which is in portrait orientation, just like the 2.4-inch touchscreen.
This is on one hand a reference to classic half-frame cameras, but it is also intended to appeal to younger users who are accustomed to smartphone cameras. The optical viewfinder is supposed to contribute to the classic user experience. The camera further supports autofocus and can also select the exposure automatically, though photos can be intentionally under- or overexposed via a dial. A pill-shaped display shows the currently selected film simulation.
The Fujifilm X half features a lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length of 32mm and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. Due to the small aperture, the camera will likely be inferior to many smartphones in low light, so Fujifilm aims to convince customers with the unusual user experience, which also includes a film roll mode through which photos can only be viewed once a virtual roll of film has been completely shot.
