This latest instant camera does not only print Instax photos, as the Instax Mini Evo Cinema can also record video clips. With a charming print lever and an "era" dial, the camera offers an unusual control scheme.

The Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo Cinema is clearly modeled after a classic Super 8 video camera. Unlike most Instax cameras, this gadget can’t just take photos that can be printed on Instax Mini film, but it also records videos. A slider can be used to switch between photo and video mode at any time.

If a still image from a video is printed, it can be marked with a QR code. When this code is scanned with a smartphone, or when the photo is inserted into the camera, the associated video can be played. The camera records vertical clips with a maximum length of 15 seconds, but Fujifilm has not mentioned the resolution of these videos. Anyhow, a viewfinder attachment can turn the small display on the back into an electronic viewfinder.

A rather special feature is the "era" dial, which is labeled with years from 1930 to 2020. Depending on the setting, the camera selects a filter that’s intended to give videos a look reminiscent of clips from the corresponding decade. In order to print a photo, the second dial on the side of the camera must be folded out and turned. It’s also possible to print images via the companion smartphone app, even if they were taken with a different camera.

Price and availability

The Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo Cinema will launch in Japan on January 30. Fujifilm has not yet confirmed pricing or availability for the rest of the world. The viewfinder attachment and an additional hand grip are included in the box, but the corresponding carrying case is sold separately.
