Buyers who are looking for one of the more affordable medium format cameras for under €8,000, such as the Fujifilm GFX100S II (from $5,699 on Amazon) or the Hasselblad X2D II, currently can't take advantage of a resolution higher than 102MP. That said, FujiRumors has learned from several sources that Fujifilm is currently developing a GFX camera based on a 180MP sensor.
This would give Fujifilm an even higher resolution than the Phase One IQ4, which costs around €57,000 and sports a 150MP sensor. However, the sensor used by Phase One is also about 49% larger, which partly explains this price difference. Since the GFX system utilizes a smaller medium format sensor measuring 43.8 x 32.9 mm, this rumored Fujifilm GFX180 could be significantly cheaper than the counterpart from Phase One. Either way, this is how the currently highest-resolution medium format sensors in cameras designed for photography compare:
| Camera | Resolution | Sensor dimensions | Sensor area |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fujifilm GFX100S II | 102 MP | 43.8 x 32.9 mm | 1,441 mm² |
| Hasselblad X2D II | 102 MP | 43.8 x 32.9 mm | 1,441 mm² |
| Phase One IQ4 | 150 MP | 53.4 x 40.1 mm | 2,141 mm² |
Since Hasselblad and Fujifilm use sensors with the same format, it’s plausible that the Hasselblad X3D will also be equipped with this new 180MP sensor. However, FujiRumors claims that it will still take some time before the first camera with this sensor hits the market. So far, there are no further details regarding the planned launch date or the remaining specifications of this 180MP medium format camera.
