The Japanese laptop market is rather peculiar. Notebooks with a round trackpad are practically only available in Japan, and many of the world’s lightest laptops also originate in Japan. The latter often feature very small batteries that would likely severely affect sales in many other regions. The new Fujitsu FMV Note A is also pretty unusual since the laptop comes with a Blu-ray drive.
The timing of this launch is no coincidence, as the end of support for Windows 10 has resulted in more demand for new computers with optical drives. Aside from the drive, the FMV Note A’s hardware is somewhat outdated. The top configuration is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 7735U from 2023, which is paired with only 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. The 16-inch IPS display has a 16:10 aspect ratio and resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels.
With a height of over an inch and a weight of almost 4.2 lbs, the FMV Note A is certainly not a lightweight laptop. This seems to be caused by the aforementioned disc drive, since the 50Wh battery is not particularly large. Either way, Fujitsu advertises a runtime of only 6.7 hours when watching video, and the notebook offers quite a few connectivity options including two USB-C ports, one of which supports USB 4. Additionally, there are two USB-A ports, HDMI, Gigabit Ethernet and an SD card reader.
Price and availability
The Fujitsu FMV Note A is already available in Japan. The base model with an Intel Core i3-1315U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and DVD drive costs the equivalent of roughly $820. The flagship configuration comes with an AMD Ryzen 7 7735U, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Blu-ray drive and a price tag of around $1,400. Fujitsu FMV laptops are typically not officially sold in Europe and North America, so these devices are only available via import from Japan.
