Thursday's release of the ThinQ app for Homey represents the official integration of LG's ThinQ smart home gadgets with the Homey ecosystem. Although LG acquired Athom, parent company of the Homey ecosystem, in a $61 million deal last July, the electronics giant did not specify how its ThinQ gadgets would work with Homey. However with LG's recent opening of the ThinQ APIs, it is hardly surprising that the Homey suite is the first to take advantage of it.
LG's ThinQ-supported appliances now fall firmly under the umbrella of the Homey suite, which also covers several smart home brands including Philips Hue, Aqara, Eufy and a thousand others. Users of Homey Cloud can download the apps of their respective smart home devices from Homey app store, and control, monitor or create automations for them within the Homey app. With LG's newly opened ThinQ APIs in the mix, this expands the functionality of Homey Cloud and Homey Pro to the 30-odd smart devices from the ThinQ lineup.
But this is only the first in a series of moves LG will be making in the smart home space since its acquisition of Homey. The integrations will get even more tightly knit as LG progresses towards its smart home "Affectionate Intelligence" ideals. Also, with an open ThinQ API, LG's smart fridges, washing machines and air conditioners will now be able to reach a much wider audience, regardless of the ecosystem. For LG, Homey is probably just the beginning.
