LG's Tandem ATO OLED display promises to extend laptop battery life

At Display Week in Los Angeles, LG unveiled a new 16-inch panel that combines high power efficiency with high brightness, making it particularly suitable for laptops. According to LG, the panel can deliver up to 2.3 hours more battery life compared with a conventional OLED display on a 16-inch notebook.
“ATO” stands for Advanced Thin OLED, while “Tandem” refers to the use of two extremely thin OLED layers rather than a typical single-layer design. The display offers a resolution of 3,200 × 2,000 pixels, a peak SDR brightness of 1,000 nits, and a peak HDR brightness of 2,000 nits. LG also claims a contrast ratio of 1:1,000,000 and 100% DCI-P3 coverage.
The Tandem ATO panel supports variable refresh rate (VRR) between 20 and 120 Hz, and LG says it is reliable enough for long-term use.
It is currently unknown when the display will be released. Launch information is typically not announced at Display Week due to the event’s strong focus on display research.
Even so, the panel could be a solid candidate for a future 16-inch MacBook Pro. Its low power draw and high brightness would also make it a good fit. Rumors about a MacBook Pro model with a tandem OLED screen have been circulating for some time, though the ongoing memory shortage appears to have affected release plans.
