The in-demand feature of ever more 'Pro-grade' optical zoom in smartphones would have resulted in top-end devices with even bigger camera humps were it not for the development of the periscope zoom module.
LG Innotek backs its take on the technology to retain optimal quality at every increment in its range (between 4x and 9x in its latest iteration) zoom thanks to its inbuilt Zoom Actuator.
It is rated to physically move the module's lenses in increments that could be as small as a few micrometers (μm) for enhanced precision in focus and accuracy.
It is found in the "Optical Continuous Zoom Camera Module", still tipped to feature in a 16- or maybe 17-series iPhone for those device's hotly-rumored upgraded magnification specs without further extending the series' current reputation for camera hump inflation.
In the meantime, the periscope zoom lens can count itself a winner of the US' "most prestigious invention award" conferred in the spirit of Thomas Edison in 2024: LG Innotek's second such honor in as many years.
