Insta360 Flow Pro: first AI tracking gimbal to support native iPhone camera and third-party iOS apps launched
Insta360 has just launched what might well be the most easily recommendable gimbal for iPhone users – the Flow Pro AI tracking stabiliser. Only last month, Apple introduced its DockKit subject-tracking developer tools, and the Flow Pro is the first handheld gimbal to integrate it, which enables its full tracking and stabilisation functionality on not just the native iPhone camera app but also on over 200 third-party iOS apps.
This means that content creators can have the camera follow the action directly on their preferred app, rather than having to shoot on a separate one. Since apps like FaceTime and Zoom are supported, it’s also ideal for video calls and conferences, especially if presenting or teaching, where the speaker needs to be kept centred in the frame.
The Insta360 Flow was already a great smartphone gimbal, offering powerful 3-axis stabilisation and AI-powered subject tracking, all in a neatly folding design that also included a built-in tripod and extending selfie stick. The Flow Pro sweetens the deal for iPhone users with DockKit integration and, in the Apple spirit of seamless inter-device communication, it includes NFC based one-tap pairing. Once paired with an iPhone, it reconnects automatically.
On the hardware front, the Flow Pro now features full 360° rotation, making infinite panning shots a possibility. It has the same Deep Track 3.0 technology seen on the Flow, which can smartly track objects, people and animals, even when the angle of view changes or the subject moves out of frame. To quickly verify if subject-tracking is activated (thus avoiding missed shots), a handy LED light has been added on the ring.
Battery life has come down slightly, at 10 hours versus the Flow’s 12 hours. Of course, like the Flow, the Flow Pro also works with Android phones, only without the native integration and NFC pairing. It goes head-to-head with the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 which, although launched two years ago, has consistently received great reviews. The Insta360 Flow Pro is now available on Amazon for $149, which is practically the same price as the Flow, so perhaps we can expect to see some discounts on the latter soon.
