Hotline Miami, developed by Dennaton Games and published by Devolver Digital in October 2012, has become a cult classic among indie games. This top-down shooter is known for its lightning-fast gameplay, neon-drenched pixel art and pulsating synthwave soundtrack. Players take on the role of Jacket, a nameless anti-hero in 1980s Miami who receives cryptic phone calls ordering him to eliminate members of the Russian mafia. As he carves through brutal massacres, the story unfolds through surreal cutscenes and enigmatic dialogue, raising more questions than answers.
The game delivers fast-paced, unforgiving gameplay where players must storm buildings and eliminate every enemy using guns, knives, baseball bats or even their bare fists. Before each mission, they can choose an animal mask that provides unique bonuses. Every enemy goes down in one hit, but so does the player, making a tactical approach essential. Success depends on analyzing rooms in an instant and executing the perfect attack route with lightning speed.
Captivating gameplay with a high level of difficulty
In its review, the German magazine GameStar praised Hotline Miami for its fast-paced, brutal gameplay and cleverly crafted story with a cryptic narrative. Unlockable weapons and masks, along with an alternative ending, add plenty of replay value. However, the difficulty is relentless, especially in later levels.
According to GameStar, the mouse and keyboard controls work well, but the gamepad implementation is less polished. Other criticisms include the limited enemy variety and the absence of voice acting. Despite these flaws, GameStar gave the game a solid 76. On Metacritic, Hotline Miami holds a Metascore of 85 and a User Score of 8.6. Meanwhile, on Steam, it has amassed around 87,500 reviews, with an impressive 97% positive rating
