The RTX 5080 with eight fewer ROPs becomes noticeably slower in some games according to a new analysis. The difference in performance between a perfect RTX 5080 with full ROPs and a faulty unit is shown to be as much as 10+%.

We reported previously that the RTX 5070 Ti seems to suffer a more than 10% performance loss with eight fewer Render Output Units (ROPs). Based on this, it was easy to see that the affected RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs would also see a notable performance regression.

But, we didn’t have any credible gaming tests to go off on. This has changed as Gamers Nexus has now put a faulty RTX 5080 with only 104 ROPs against a fully functioning model with the full 112 ROPs in a bunch of different games. The resulting figures could prove to be troublesome for some gamers.

According to testing done by GN at 4K, the RTX 5080 with full ROPs shows anywhere from no performance advantage to an 11% improvement. The smallest delta exists in games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Black Myth: Wukong where there is no difference between the two cards. However, the RTX 5080 with 112 ROPs comes out to be 4.9% faster than the RTX 5080 with missing ROPs in Dragon’s Dogma 2. The difference increases to 8.7% for Dying Light 2 and a mentionable 11% in Total War: Warhammer 3.

At 1440p, the difference between a fully functioning RTX 5080 and one with 8 fewer ROPs is minimal in most tested titles. However, in Dying Light 2, the RTX 5080 with 112 ROPs performs 8.8% better. In other words, the gaming performance regression differs from game to game. While some titles run identically on both cards, there are reportedly games that run significantly slower on the RTX 5080 with fewer ROPs.

Unsurprisingly, this performance hit affects the RTX 5080’s standing against other GPUs in the games that see the most performance loss. Gamers Nexus goes into more detail in individual titles and compares the resulting performance with the 5070 Ti and the RX 7900 XTX. So, be sure to check out the full video linked below.

In conclusion, ensure that your RTX 5090/5080/5070 Ti has full ROPs and, if not, get a refund or replacement.
