The Hotwav Hyper 8 Ultra is a new rugged phone that not only supports 5G connectivity but also features a walkie-talkie function and encrypted digital radio communication.

A word of caution before we begin: Just because the Hotwav Hyper 8 Ultra can operate as a walkie-talkie in both UHF and VHF bands, this doesn’t mean it is advisable to use the device for such purposes without careful consideration. Users should first thoroughly familiarise themselves with the legal requirements for deploying such a system in their region. Nonetheless, it remains unclear how much the walkie-talkie function actually impacts others when trekking in remote areas. This feature promises a range of up to 20 km (12.4 mi) and also supports encrypted digital radio communication.

Priced at $580 for early adopters, the Hotwav Hyper 8 Ultra is not yet available for purchase. Measuring 180.2 x 83.5 x 21.95 mm (7.09 x 3.29 x 0.86 in) and weighing 525 g (1.16 lb), the device is powered by a MediaTek MT8791 chipset with 5G connectivity. Whilst it offers dual SIM capability, the second slot can also double as a memory card slot for storage expansion. The phone ships with 512 GB of internal storage and 12 GB of RAM.

Beyond its walkie-talkie function, the Hyper 8 Ultra includes several features commonly found on rugged phones. These include a loudspeaker rated at 125 dB, a 20 MP night-vision camera, and a wide-beam torchlight delivering up to 280 lumens. Besides USB-C, the 12,000 mAh internal battery can charge via pogo pins when the phone is in a docking station. The 6.8-inch display offers a resolution of 1,080 x 2,460 pixels and a 120 Hz refresh rate. According to official specs, the Hyper 8 Ultra meets IP68, IP69K and MIL-STD-810H standards.
