Huion has officially released the new Kamvas 22 Gen 3, rounding out its line-up of pen displays for digital artists, animators, and designers. The Kamvas 22 Gen 3 boasts a number of upgrades over the older Kamvas 22 series, including Pen Tech 4.0, a high refresh rate, a fully laminated display, and high colour accuracy.

After teasing the launch for a number of weeks, Huion has just announced its Gen 3 competition to devices like the Wacom Cintiq 24, and if the promised specs are anything to go by, the new Huion Kamvas 22 Gen 3 will be giving Wacom a solid run for its money when it comes to large-format artist pen displays. The Kamvas 22 Gen 3 is a more affordable flagship IPS pen display that essentially serves to replace the Kamvas 22 Plus, delivering a sharper, brighter display, better pressure sensitivity, and an improved drawing experience thanks to new pen tech. The Kamvas 22 Gen 3 is launching at $599 on the Huion web store, although it is not yet available on Amazon

Upgrades galore, with gamer RGB to boot

One of the more notable upgrades included in the Huion Kamvas 22 Gen 3 is the QHD resolution — up from 1080p on the outgoing models—which increases the pixel density to 137 PPI. The Kamvas 22 Gen 3 also has the same matte coating and battery-free PenTech 4.0 PW600L pen that we praised in our review of the smaller Kamvas 16 Gen 3 (curr. $459 on Amazon). The 90 Hz refresh rate upgrade should also make for a substantially smoother drawing experience, although this may be somewhat held back by the 14 ms response time — 11 ms should be the target response time for smooth, clear motion on a 90 Hz display.

Brightness, which was one of the minor complaints of the Kamvas 16 Gen 3, has also been bumped up from 220 nits on the Kamvas 22 and Kamvas 22 Plus to 250 nits on the Kamvas 22 Gen 3 — not a massive improvement, but a solid 14% improvement is nothing to sneeze at. The Kamvas 22 Gen 3 is also factory calibrated, with five colour modes – Native, sRGB, Rec.709, AdobeRGB, Display P3, and a black and white mode for reduced eye strain. Huion claims that the Kamvas 22 Gen 3 has delta-E values of below 1.2, with 99% sRGB, 99% Rec.709, 90% AdobeRGB, and 94% Display P3 colour space coverage, which would make it a solid option for everything from digital art and 3D sculpting to graphic design and photo editing.

Specs aside, there are a few ergonomic upgrades to the Kamvas 22 Gen 3, as well. For starters, it has fully customisable ambient lighting, which is there to reduce eye strain, and the Kamvas 22 Gen 3 also features the same dual connectivity options — USB Type-C with DP Alt Mode and the 3-in-1 cable with USB, power, and HDMI — for wide compatibility and convenience. The included ST100D stand allows for display angles of 20–80°. Huion also includes a nifty pen holder that clips onto the top of the pen display.
