A few weeks ago, Huawei was presenting its plans to overtake Apple’s yearly sales by 2019, and it seems like the Chinese company is well on its way to achieving that particular goal. According to the latest report from IDC (The International Data Corporation), Huawei already managed to sell more handsets than apple in Q2 2018 and it does not seem to be showing signs of slowdown any time soon.
Overall sales are down 1.8% on a year-by-year basis. Still, 342 million handsets sold in Q2 2018 is nothing to scoff at. Samsung is still on top of things, managing to sell 71.5 million devices (20.9% of the global market). Not too far behind is Huawei, which managed to sell 54.2 million devices (15.8%), while Apple sold only 41.3 million phones (12.1%). The fourth and fifth spots were snagged by two more Chinese OEMs: Xiaomi – 9.3% and OPPO – 8.6%. All the other OEMs unaccounted for amount to 33.2% of the global market.
Statistics point out to the fact that Huawei’s P20/Pro models, as well as the secondary Honor brand greatly contributed to the Q2 sales. Huawei also managed to break into new markets and is able to sell more mid-range and entry-level phones due to its aggressive prices.
Huawei’s next big target is the U.S. market, but the U.S. government is till hindering the Chinese with the trading embargoes, so it remains to be seen how well this incursion is handled.
