Huawei announces NFC payment update for new smartwatches

Huawei has announced that it is rolling out NFC payment functionality to some of its new smartwatches in Europe this year. The feature will arrive for the recently launched Watch GT 5, Watch GT 5 Pro and Watch Ultimate Green Edition wearables.

This contactless payments feature will allow users to make purchases via the Quicko Wallet app without their smartphone or wallet. The tool will roll out to users of these Huawei smartwatches in a software update. In a recent press release, the company announced that the NFC payments feature would arrive for Android users in Germany from December 2024. The update is then expected to roll out to iOS users in this country at some point in the first half of 2025; an exact release date has yet to be provided.

Quicko Wallet NFC payments are already available for users in Poland. Rumors suggest that the update could reach users of the Huawei Watch GT 5 series and Watch Ultimate Green Edition wearables in other countries in 2025. However, it remains to be seen if older versions of the Watch Ultimate will get the feature.
