Huawei Watch Buds: A future smartwatch from Huawei could feature a pair of built-in earbuds
A trademark application implies that Huawei may be looking to change up its wearables offering with a smartwatch that contains built-in earbuds. Discovered by LetsGoDigital, the application refers to a device called the 'Huawei Watch Buds', with the clue being in the name.
Filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) on March 28, 2022, the patent corresponds to the EU's Nice 9 and 14 classifications. As the screenshot below shows, classification 9 describes a smartwatch containing earphones, with classification 14 covering wristwatches in general. For reference, Huawei would not be the first company to release a smartwatch with built-in earbuds, although it would be one of the first major manufacturers to do so.
It remains to be seen why Huawei would want to release such a smartwatch, mind you. Typically, smartwatch and earbud combinations are bulky and sacrifice various smartwatch features to house a pair of earbuds. Also, Huawei already sells earbuds separately, such as the FreeBuds 4. Presumably, Huawei would be unable to fit earbuds as large as the FreeBuds 4 within a smartwatch too.
Huawei has not started teasing the Watch Buds yet, either. However, we imagine that the device will not be ready to be released for a while yet. In saying that, its registration with the EUIPO implies that Huawei intends to sell the Watch Buds outside China.
