Reviews for the Huawei MateBook 16s i9
With the MateBook 16s, Huawei offers large multimedia laptops with Intel processors. Now in 2023, it includes the current Core i9 of the Raptor Lake H series and a brighter display. In our test, the premium laptop from China shows its many strengths and few weaknesses.

All the features that made the 2022 MateBook 16s a favourite last year are still present and correct: the expansive 3:2 touch screen, the excellent sound system and the low-profile chassis. The extra performance from the Raptor Lake Core i9 processor and increased battery life are most welcome, as is the increased brightness levels of the display. The most important feature of the new MateBook 16s, however, is the price. For the current price of £1,099, it’s an absolute steal and it’s pretty impressive at the list price of £1,499. I would have liked Huawei to be just a bit more adventurous in the design department with its 2023 refresh but, at this price, whose complaining?

The Huawei Matebook 16s isn’t a bad offering and packs in good hardware in a chassis that feels very solid. However, it lacks in terms of configuration options and upgradability, and it doesn’t have any quality that would make it a very strong recommendation. That’s not great since it’s in a market segment that is flooded with great options. A solid example of a good alternative is the new MacBook Air 15, which lands around the same price but boasts superior hardware. Samsung also has the Galaxy Book3 in multiple sizes, flavours, and AMOLED screens around this price tag. There’s also the Asus Zenbook Pro 14 Duo, which is smaller in size but makes up for it with the extra screen. There are also quite a few gaming laptop options in this price bracket that tick the right boxes. Many of the best laptops around are more exciting – be it Apple Silicon, AMOLED screens, or the novelty and practicality of a dual display. The MateBook 16s almost seems boring in comparison, but that’s not a bad thing for everybody. It performs decently and blends in.

The Huawei Matebook 16s continues to be one of the best big screen Windows laptops you can buy, even though the company has done nothing to improve this laptop other than add a more powerful 13th Gen Intel processor. If you already have one, skip this generation.

Huawei’s updated MateBook 16s remains an excellent 16in laptop, but not much has changed compared to last year. In fact, the only upgrade is a new 13th-gen Intel CPU. While performance and battery life are noticeably improved as a result, it still lacks the dedicated GPU required for top-tier graphical output. Power efficiency is behind the battery life gains, with no changes to the capacity or mediocre charging speeds. There’s also still no face unlock, SD card slot or separate number pad. But I’m also hesitant to be too harsh here. The 16in touchscreen, keyboard and port selection are all excellent, while the minimalist design looks great in almost any situation. Its webcam and audio are impressive, too. All that means the 2023 MateBook 16s is a great laptop that will serve many people well. But it could’ve been even better.

So, would I recommend you buy the MateBook 16s? Definitely. It offers fantastic productivity potential, even for heavier users who go beyond spreadsheets and text documents, into design work. It is an excellent all rounder, delivering a seamless experience; even more so if you've invested in Huawei's wider ecosystem, given its compatibility with Super Device. In short, you're probably looking at one of the best 16-inch Windows laptops available right now, which is saying something, considering the multitude of brands out there.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
