Reviews for the Huawei MateBook D 16 2024
Huawei has equipped the 2024 model of its multimedia laptop, the MateBook D 16, with an Intel Core i9-13900H processor. However, it is held back by its power limits. Severe cuts have been made, especially regarding the ports but, by contrast, the battery life has improved.

The Huawei MateBook D16 (2024) might not be anyone’s dream laptop, but with its big screen, slimline style and powerful CPU, it’s a very decent option for anyone needing a machine they can work on all day long, but still need everyday portability. And while the Core i9 variant doesn’t come in at the same low price as the Core i5 version, it still gives you a lot of performance for what’s still a very reasonable price. True, Huawei’s thinner, lighter laptop can’t quite match the premium quality of the 15-inch Macbook Air or the lightweight finesse of the LG Gram 16, but it gets you a lot of the way there on a lower budget. For anyone struggling to justify spending more than £1000, that’s going to be more than enough. Otherwise, check out our Best Laptop guide for more options.

Simply put, the Huawei MateBook D 16 is a good laptop. It’s clearly aimed at the professional market, and designed to take on the likes of Dell and its XPS line-up but at a far more affordable price point. That’s great, and it does well in some key areas, particularly performance, but it lacks the refinement and simplicity of its competition - something that's particularly apparent when it comes to build quality and software. If you can look past that, it’s a decent laptop ideal for any professional.

The Huawei D 16 was overpriced at launch. For £1,200, I expect more, and faster, I/O ports and a display with an altogether higher specification. For £999, it makes rather more sense as a conventional well-made 16in notebook capable of impressive performance levels with good battery life. You still have to live with 13th rather than 14th-generation silicon, so you will be forgoing the much-improved graphics and AI performance inherent in the new Metro Lake chips. The D 16 does well as a workhorse, but if it were my money, I’d find the extra £100 and go for the Huawei MateBook 16s, which has a better display and superior selection of I/O ports.

After three and a half years, the Honor MagicBook Pro 16, boasting a hunter pedigree, surprises us anew. From its sleek appearance to its deeper essence, this AI-focused notebook offers a range of conveniences. Seamlessly integrated with the magic AI workbench, it simplifies tasks like text, graphics, and audio-video processing. Moreover, Honor’s smart interconnection feature effortlessly links mobile phones, tablets, and notebooks. With a mere finger’s movement, documents, images, and videos can be swiftly transferred among devices. Performance-wise, the Honor MagicBook Pro 16 impresses with its efficient power consumption and temperature management. Achieving a dual-baking power consumption of 140W with a temperature of only 80°C is a feat unmatched by many thin and light notebooks.

It’s difficult to sum up the MateBook D 16, with its dramatically different specs between models, so it depends on which one you plump for. On one hand, it offers a compelling experience for just £699, with an enjoyable display, impressive keyboard and solid build quality. The fingerprint sensor is very good, too. All those things are also true of the £1,199 model, but it gets the benefit of a much more powerful processor and larger battery. Considering both models suffer from a poor webcam, only one USB-C port and no discrete graphics, neither is an easy recommendation. But when you consider the lack of capable sub-£700 laptops out there, the MateBook D 16 is still one of the best options out there. The high-end version is a tough sell, though.

With these positives in mind, just take note of the MateBook D16’s specs and what use cases you have in mind. The RAM, storage and graphical capabilities may not be exactly what you need if you mainly work in fields such as design, CAD, animation and more. Also this notebook lacks some features which other offerings at many price points have, such as a touch screen and the ability to be folded into a tablet or tent mode. But then, as always, those features may increase the size of the notebook, its battery draw and form factor, even speaking of comparisons outside the scope of exact price. As a total package then there are a few niggles and features we could have asked for but nothing significantly brings it down and we’re very happy to have such a powerhouse like this in a reasonably compact package as loadshedding continues to plague the country in 2024.

The Huawei MateBook D 16 2024 is a powerful laptop with a large screen, long battery life, and a metal body. The matte display provides quality color reproduction, and the keyboard and touchpad are comfortable. The model offers excellent performance for office tasks, while remaining cool and quiet. However, the price of the test model with an i9 processor is too high: there's a desire for more ports, a better camera, and a higher-resolution screen.

The refreshed Huawei MateBook D 16 2024 is a superior productivity oriented laptop with a large 16-inch screen ideal for paperwork, a full sized keyboard and a beefy 13th Gen Intel Core i9 processor combined with decent battery life for its size. For what you pay for, this is one of the more reasonably priced laptops of its size that pack a 13th Gen i9 processor though the lack of a colour accurate screen precludes usage for creative work.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
