Huawei has presented plenty of high-end smartphones today. One of the most expensive of the bunch is the Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design, which comes in at just CNY 1,000 (~$138) less than the folding Mate X6. With a starting price of CNY 11,999 (~$1,655), the Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design is also CNY 3,500 (~$483) more expensive than the Mate 70 Pro Plus.
Ultimately, little splits the pair at first glance. For instance, the Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design features the same 5,700 mAh battery as the Mate 70 Pro Plus that it can recharge at 80 W wirelessly or 100 W via a wired connection. Moreover, Huawei equips the Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design with the same triple camera system, despite the four apertures on its huge octagonal camera housing suggesting otherwise.
However, the Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design contains a tandem OLED display, just like the MatePad Pro 12.2 and Apple iPad Pro 13 (curr. $1,099 on Amazon). While the device retains a 6.9-inch panel size, a 1-120 Hz variable refresh rate and a 2,832 x 1,316-pixel resolution, it has a 1,000 nit higher peak brightness of 3,500 nits.
On top of that, Huawei has installed basalt-tempered Kunlun Glass that is said to be more scratch and drop-resistant than the Kunlun Glass 2 found in the Mate 70 Pro Plus. The Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design also has a more ostentatious design, which contributes to it being 24~30 g heavier than the Mate 70 Pro Plus. Like the rest of the Mate 70 series, it remains to be seen whether Huawei will offer the Mate 70 RS Ultimate Design outside China.
